The New UK Mobile Museum Truck

The UK’s first permanent Mobile Museum will hit the road next year, bringing world class art exhibitions directly to communities across the country. The custom-built mobile gallery, funded by the UK Government, will tour three national collections per year, including the Government Art Collection.

Seven internationally recognised design practices — Studio Weave, OMMX, Neon Architects, MAP Project Office, 6a architects, Sam Jacob and Ab Rogers Design — were invited to develop concept proposals for the vehicle, each required to meet national museum display standards while in transit. Four practices were shortlisted to develop their designs further, with Ab Rogers Designselected by an expert jury to take his design forward, commended for combining the joy of the circus with practical considerations for collection display and the visitor experience.

This exhibition, part of the London Design Festival, will bring the creative process behind the mobile museum to life, showcasing the drawings, designs and innovative ideas of the shortlisted designers alongside Ab Rogers’ winning proposal, which is now being built by Torton Bodies Ltd, ready to start touring in 2027.

Ab Rogers Design

Ab Rogers Design is a London-based studio founded in 2004 by Ab Rogers. The practice works across architecture, interiors and experience design, creating spaces intended to shape behaviour and elevate everyday experience. Past clients have included the Tate Modern, the Barbican Centre and several NHS hospitals.

Government Art Collection

The Government Art Collection was established in 1899 and is a national collection of historic, modern and contemporary British art that is displayed in government buildings in the UK and around the world. The works are seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, promoting British art and contributing to cultural diplomacy. Through an extensive public engagement programme, the GAC brings artworks into the heart of communities and works with UK and international partners to support creative exchange and skill development for young people.
